- Mengele was SS member and physician in the concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. He gained notoriety for the supervision of the selection of the arriving prisoners - he determined who was killed immediately and who bacame a forced laborer - and his human experiments which were in most cases fatal. Under the inmates of the camp he was kown as "The Angel of Death".
