- kapo: this is a term for a inmate of a concentration or extermination camp who worked for the SS (schutzstaffel) against his own people. kapos had priviliges and better chances to survive. they were responsible for the results of the work and that´s why the often were very uncompromising with other inmates - often criminals were taken to do the "job", there was a real strategy which people to chose.
after wwII many kapos were killed by other inmates when recognized on the streets - because they were still treated as inmates and therefore came to the displaced person camps.
the alias and the "88" don´t leave any doubt how it is meant. in the big camps there were those "superkapos" called "oberkapo".
